Rural home

Well and septic: understand the whole system

A home outside municipal water or sewer has its own critical infrastructure.

Important: Choose water treatment from test results, not from taste, odour or colour alone.

Well, pump and pressure

Well, pump, check valve, pressure tank, filters and power should be diagnosed as one system.

Water testing and treatment

Plan microbiological testing at least twice a year; select filtration, softening, UV or other treatment from measured contaminants.

Septic and disposal field

Keep plans, location, pumping and work history. Odours, slow drains, soggy ground or backup are investigation signals.

After flood or outage

Do not assume water remains potable after contamination risk; plan for electric pump dependence.

Intervention level

Green — homeowner

  • Keep testing/pumping records
  • Track flow and pressure
  • Locate disposal field

Yellow — caution

  • Diagnose pump/tank with measurements
  • Choose treatment after testing
  • Inspect aging installation

Red — professional / stop

  • Sewage backup
  • Unresolved contamination
  • Septic modification without required design/approval

Legacy conditions and resilience systems

Check these before enclosing, excavating, modernizing or automating an existing system.

Advanced systems and special cases

Checks that change sequencing, risk or which professionals must be coordinated.
