Thermal comfort

Measure air temperature, surface temperature, drafts and humidity. A cold room may result from air leakage, cold glazing, a poorly placed emitter or distribution imbalance, not merely the thermostat.

Humidity

Maintain a level compatible with climate and enclosure. Too high promotes condensation and mould; too low increases discomfort and static. Use reliable hygrometers and find the source before adding humidification or dehumidification.

Air quality

Vent kitchens and bathrooms outdoors, maintain filters and HRV/ERV, control dust at source and avoid fragrances that mask a problem. Long-term test for radon and address combustion or moisture sources.

Acoustics

Reduce airborne noise with mass and sealing, impact noise with decoupling and soft surfaces, and reverberation with textiles, panels and furniture. Correct mechanical sources before adding absorption.

Light and rhythm

Maximize daylight without glare, provide true darkness for sleep and use lower, warmer light in the evening. Avoid one central source; layer ambient, task and accent lighting.
