During construction
Create a fully separated zone with access control, suitable HEPA cleanup, and daily storage of tools, fasteners, products and waste. Do not rely on verbal instructions. Plan noise, dust, ventilation and temporary accommodation if needed.
Falls and entrapment
Check stairs, guards, balusters, low windows, blind cords, climbable furniture, doors, chests and gaps between furniture and walls. Anchor furniture and televisions with designed systems; gates must suit the location.
Water and burns
Control water temperature and access to faucets, tubs, pools, hot tubs and hot appliances. Provide rapid shutoff, slip-resistant surfaces and supervision. Anti-scald devices must be correctly selected and set.
Fire, electricity and products
Maintain working alarms, simple exits, suitable outlet protection, managed cords, and controlled access to button batteries, medicines, chemicals, cannabis, alcohol and tools. Safety locks must not block adult escape.
Rooms that grow
Use adjustable storage, repairable surfaces, night lighting, well-placed outlets, stable furniture and washable finishes. Avoid expensive permanent themes; evolve paint, textiles and accessories.
Air quality
Choose low-emission products where practical, respect cure time, ventilate and keep children away from sanding, stripping, demolition or contaminant cleanup. Older homes may require lead or asbestos checks.
