What must be verified locally
Alarm location, interconnection, power, replacement and quantity depend on the adopted code, building age and layout. Verify with the municipality, fire department and manufacturer; never remove a required device.
Smoke and CO alarms
Provide alarms on each level and near sleeping areas as local rules require. CO concerns combustion appliances, attached garages and other potential sources. Test per manufacturer, replace batteries and devices at end of life, and record dates.
Extinguishers
Choose a rating suited to the hazards, keep the unit visible near an exit without crossing the fire, learn PASS and inspect gauge, pin, hose and date. A growing fire, heavy smoke or a blocked exit requires evacuation and emergency services.
Escape
Plan two exits where possible, operable doors and windows, visible street number, meeting point, and arrangements for children, older adults, limited mobility and pets. Practise by day and night; do not re-enter for belongings.
Building prevention
Maintain fire separations, garage doors, sealed penetrations, appliance clearances, dryer ducts, chimney, range hood, wiring and combustible storage. Do not pierce or cover a separation without restoring the intended assembly.
Schedule
Monthly: functional test per manufacturer. Seasonally: escape, heating, ducts and access. Annually: hazard inventory, alarm dates, extinguishers and chimney service. After renovation: reassess location, interconnection and access.
