Before every tool

Read the manual and inspect nameplate, guards, handle, switch, cord, battery, accessory and compatibility. Choose blade, bit or disc for material, speed, diameter and machine. Remove chuck keys and loose objects.

Secure the work

Lay out the work, check hidden services, support both sides without pinching the blade, clamp it and keep hands out of the path. Do not hand-hold a small piece near a blade or bit.

Saws

Set only needed depth, reach full speed, keep the shoe supported, anticipate kickback, do not twist the blade and wait for full stop before setting down. Mitre saw: hands out of zone, work against fence, no freehand cuts. Table saw: fence, push stick, riving knife and guard for the authorized operation.

Drills and drivers

Locate wires and pipes, select speed, limit torque, use two hands for large diameters and clear the bit regularly. An impact driver can break a fastener or crush material; finish with controlled torque when critical.

Nailers

Treat as loaded, keep the finger off the trigger while positioning, never point at a person and avoid nailing toward a hidden hand. Disconnect air or battery before clearing jams, adjustment or transport; use the appropriate trigger mode.

Dust, noise and energy

Capture at source, isolate the area, wear suitable protection and select respiratory protection for the contaminant. Unplug or remove the battery before accessory changes. Never defeat a guard, brake, lock or dead-man switch.

Stop and storage

Stop for vibration, odour, noise, heat, kickback, damaged accessory or unexpected result. Clean with suitable extraction, let cool, remove energy and store tools, blades, nails and batteries away from children.
