Bulging brick wall

Bulging masonry can signal veneer movement, deficient ties, corrosion, water, freeze-thaw or support problems. Do not push it back or cover it.

What to look at

Document

Stair-step cracks, open joints, spalled brick, nearby lintels and flashings.

Drainage, gutters, grade and signs of water behind the veneer.

Stop point

When to stop

Significant bulge, loose brick, falling pieces, progressing cracks or stability concern = secure the area and obtain professional inspection.

Useful record

  • Dated overview and close-up photos.
  • Simple repeated measurements at the same safe location.
  • Associated events: rain, freeze/thaw, recent work or impact.
  • Do not conceal the defect before inspection when progression or cause is uncertain.
